Description
Young man Vladan embarks on a journey through the former Yugoslavia with the reader, during the period just before its collapse and the years following it. He takes them along to his mischievously happy childhood on the Adriatic coast, navigates through the fog of anxious monitoring of political speeches justifying the burning of villages in Slavonia, to the refuge of a panel apartment in Slovenia, and after years sets out to travel through Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia to discover what has actually happened to everyone here. The narrator's reflections reveal the mentality of the local people, the roots of the disintegration of coexistence among such close nations, and consequently the inevitable breakdown of his own family and the world in which he lived. The tone of the narrative masterfully oscillates between dark humor, ironic exaggeration, and dark bitterness. The novel My Yugoslavia (2012) by Goran Vojnović (*1980) was awarded the Slovenian Kresnik Prize for Novel of the Year and the Angelus Prize for Best Central European Novel of the Year in Poland.
