The book The Forms of Exile in Jewish Literature and Thought deals with the concept of exile on many levels – from the literal to the metaphorical. It combines analyses of predominantly Jewish authors from Central Europe in the twentieth century, who are usually not associated together, such as Kafka, Kraus, Levi, Lustig, Wiesel, and Frankl. It also traces the typical paths that exiled authors took, from East to West and later to America. The concept of exile and its forms is analyzed from many different perspectives, with a strong emphasis on the forms of internal exile. Bronislava Volková, herself a long-time exile and therefore intimately familiar with the topic through personal experience, creates a unique typology of exile in the book that enriches the field of intellectual and literary history of Europe and America in the twentieth century.
