Description

Although Czech, English, and German are Indo-European languages and share some common features, each has its specific grammatical system. The existence of different concepts of grammatical categories in these three Indo-European languages often complicates the process of learning them. The problem arises especially when we cannot find a parallel in the language we are learning for already mastered language phenomena from one language. The presented publication deals with how the three aforementioned languages interpret original direct speech. In some aspects, the way of expression does not differ (deictic expressions or sentence structures change). However, Czech native speakers learning German or English must master some linguistic aspects that they do not know from Czech. At the beginning of the preparation of this publication, the authors could not have anticipated how relevant the issue of expressing foreign opinion would become and how strongly the topic of COVID would influence media reporting. Many of the cited examples were taken from current newspaper and internet articles.
