The book deals with geographical names (local, place, street names) in the border area and their development from the earliest times to the present, based on material from the Jeseník district (Silesia, Olomouc Region). For this area – as well as for other districts in the former Sudetenland – it holds that a large part of the names was of German origin. This fact posed a pressing and fundamental question with societal significance after 1945, during a time calling for the overall de-Germanization of the republic. Names were then Germanized and Czechified to varying degrees. The text primarily focuses on this renaming process – both from a formal and motivational perspective, viewed by both experts and the general public. It also provides an overview of current trends in contemporary naming processes and name creation.
