Description
Lévi-Strauss and Music, Nattiez's 2008 study, presents both a comprehensive view of the issue of music in Lévi-Strauss's work and critically engages with Lévi-Straussian anthropology against this musicological background. Nattiez shows that music has a crucial significance in Lévi-Strauss's structuralist project, as it provides him with a model for the structural analysis of myth, which will be particularly developed in his four-volume work Mythologica. However, Nattiez raises many substantial questions regarding this musical model: among them are the problem of comparing music and language, certain difficulties associated with Lévi-Strauss's methodology, and some inconsistencies regarding Lévi-Strauss's interpretation of specific musical works (especially Wagner). As a result, this simultaneously critical and admiring monograph can also serve as a remarkable and unconventional introduction to Lévi-Strauss's structural anthropology as such.
