Description
The plot of the autobiographical novel by Belarusian writer Viktar Valtar takes place in Prague in the 1920s, in the environment of foreign students and political emigrants from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, and other Eastern countries affected by civil war. In his book, the author managed to capture the atmosphere of the First Republic in a unique way through the eyes of an immigrant. Unfortunately, the novel is Valtar's only surviving extensive prose work. It was not published during the author's short life, and his manuscript, discovered in the early 1990s in Lithuania, rewrote the history of Belarusian literature. The novel saw its first book publication in Belarus only recently – in 2009.
