‘... neither dressed nor undressed...’ thus a poor girl from a fairy tale had to stand before the king. Neither dressed nor undressed, veiled only by a thin, transparent veil – the atmosphere – our Earth moves through the universe. The veil is thin and fragile, but in composition and properties, it is exactly what we need. It protects the Earth from high-energy radiation while allowing visible light to pass through. It prevents infrared radiation from escaping into the cold universe, thus maintaining the temperature necessary for life on the surface. What the atmosphere does not contain – molecules of gases, water vapor, droplets of water, particles of dust, organic compounds... Its composition has changed throughout the history of the planet, influenced (also) by the arrangement of continents, the direction of ocean currents, and surprisingly, by living organisms. It was different during glacial periods and different during interglacial periods. Living organisms still influence the atmosphere. So does man. The book aims to show the curious reader how the atmosphere helps maintain stable conditions suitable for life on Earth, how it affects the temperature on the Earth's surface, and to familiarize them with the processes that influence its composition.
