Description
The presented book is the first introduction to the Renaissance doctrine of "signatures of things" (signatura rerum) in the Czech language. The book Signs of Things traces the philosophical and historical foundations of the doctrine of signatures and presents the ideas of some of the most prominent protagonists of this theory, according to which the external forms of things reveal their internal nature, forces, and effects. Thanks to these perceptible "signatures" or markings, one can recognize the mutual internal affinities and sympathies among beings, their harmonious relationships – from created things and stars to the soul of the world and the divine intellect. In its time, this doctrine was closely associated with astrology and found practical application primarily in the context of medicine and so-called "natural magic." The book includes an anthology in which some key passages from the works of Paracelsus, Valentin Weigel, Heinrich Khunrath, Oswald Croll, and Jacob Böhme are made accessible in translation.
