Description
The Easter hymns of Saint Ephrem the Syrian (306–373) is a collection of liturgical poetry composed based on readings from the Gospels during the Easter season. The Nisibene deacon and choir master reflects on Christ's Pascha, a three-day sequence of events from the Passover meal on the eve of Good Friday through Jesus' suffering and death on the cross to the night of the Resurrection. Therefore, this collection, originating from various manuscripts, is divided into three sections: On the Feast of Unleavened Bread, On the Crucifixion, and On the Resurrection. In a similar poetic manner, Saint Ephrem crafted his homilies for the Christmas season and for Lent. The liturgical hymns consist of regular stanzas recited by a singer and refrains sung by a male or female choir of laypersons dedicated to this service in the manner of religious communities. This translation of the Easter hymns follows the poetic meditation on Adam's sin, the loss of paradise, and its restoration titled Hymns on Paradise, which was published in Czech in 2018.
