Description
The publication addresses the issue of mutual comparison of the grammatical systems of Czech, German, and English, with a particular emphasis on the extensive and very tricky issue of verbs for students. […] The introductory chapters introduce readers to conceptual questions regarding foreign language teaching. They observe the process of promoting multilingualism in Czech educational policy and point out the advantages as well as the pitfalls associated with learning two related languages – German and English after Czech as the mother tongue. […] In the second part of the book, all attention is focused on comparing the verb system, especially with an emphasis on full-meaning verbs. The authors provide a fairly detailed explanation concerning person, number, tense, mood, aspect, verb gender, and the infinitive forms of verbs – infinitives and participles in all three languages. They compare linguistic phenomena with each other, using specific example sentences to show where students might make mistakes, and where teachers should therefore be alert in their German and English lessons. Such a detailed comparison of the verb system is unique not only in Czech professional literature but also in foreign literature.
