Description
King and priest Melchizedek is a somewhat marginal figure in the biblical texts. Nevertheless, two brief mentions of him have sparked a whole range of interpretations in both Jewish and Christian contexts, where this mysterious figure enjoys great attention. The collective work of authors from the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University presents a number of studies that map the work with Melchizedekian motifs in Second Temple Judaism, in the Christian Letter to the Hebrews, and in other Jewish and Christian, orthodox and heterodox environments. This more systematic overview is supplemented by a chapter on the interpretation of the figure of Melchizedek in early modern Catholic theology and a study on Melchizedekian themes in visual art.
