Description
The book makes accessible to the Czech reader the text of Athenagoras' Plea for Christians, which represents an early Christian apologetic work that has not yet been translated into Czech, along with the results of contemporary research on Athenagoras and his thought. The translation of the Plea for Christians is accompanied by an extensive original commentary that highlights the ancient, Hellenistic-Jewish, and Christian sources of Athenagoras' ideas. References to other patristic texts place Athenagoras' work and thought within a broader framework of Christian apologetics. Last but not least, it also presents the results of modern research on Athenagoras' work and thought.
The commented translation of Athenagoras' Plea is preceded by an introduction that, in the first part, focuses on the study of Athenagoras as a Christian apologist, his apologetic work from the perspective of literary genre, and Athenagoras' political theology. The second part provides an analysis of Athenagoras' theological thought and outlines Athenagoras' reception of Xenophanes' philosophical theology, which influenced both his attitude towards ancient religiosity and the interpretation of his own biblical tradition.
