Description
The publication presents a selection of correspondence from the significant Russian poet Daniil Leonidovich Andreyev (1906–1959), both with his close friends and family from childhood until the last months before his death, as well as with his third wife Alla Alexandrovna. The first part captures letters from the 1930s and 1950s, while the second primarily covers the years 1954–1957. Daniil Andreyev's correspondence provides insight into the intellectual life of Stalinist Soviet Union, shedding light on the lives of prisoners and the released during the post-Stalin era, along with their existential struggles and efforts to cope with a repressive state. At the same time, it offers a portrait of a significant and highly cultured creator – a victim of the Stalinist system, a person of individuality, principled to the point of stubbornness, yet also tender, caring, and a faithfully loving husband after many years of separation. The correspondence is complemented by Andreyev's biography penned by his wife Alla Alexandrovna. The book is equipped with an introductory study, a note apparatus, and explanatory comments from the translator.
