Description
The exclamation "Holy Mary" is a widely used phrase that for a long time had no apparent connection to the now-defunct village of Skoky near Žlutice. The situation changed in 2006. The once-imposing local pilgrimage church was subjected to unprecedented looting, during which a group of thieves cut off the tops of the church's domes to obtain copper. One of the thieves fell from the church roof. However, he miraculously survived, and the subsequent media coverage of this case attracted the attention of various interest groups that are currently trying to save the church and revive the forgotten pilgrimage tradition in Skoky. The book presents ways of remembering this forgotten pilgrimage site through three case studies and discusses more general issues related to the research of collective memory. The author distinguishes himself from traditional research closely associated with a tendency that can be described as the dematerialization of memory and seeks to reflect on the formation of memory in relation to material objects and infrastructure.
