Description
The booklet On Dreams is mysterious even by the standards of the late antique philosophical-religious environment of its origin. Synesius of Cyrene (370–413 AD), as a student of the Alexandrian philosopher Hypatia, richly expounds within a Neoplatonic framework on the relationship of the soul to the world, its unexpectedly changeable life, and the potential for salvation or humiliation. A distinctive feature of the treatise is that it centers around the interpretation of the so-called pneumata, the inner-worldly correlate of our immaterial soul. However, the easily accessible and pragmatic ability of the soul to predict the future from our dreams, according to the author, represents merely a byproduct of a journey leading significantly deeper. The majority of the book consists of a contextualizing introduction to the treatise On Dreams, its detailed interpretative commentary, and explanatory notes.
