The monograph Creation or Nature? is a research probe into the intellectual history of European culture in the field of the interpretation of nature. It focuses on the early modern period between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and discusses the topic of nature at the intersection of contemporary worldviews and human perceptions, concepts, and methods as understood and employed by theology intertwined with philosophy and the new – natural – science. The fundamental epistemological question of the book is: How was, or could have been, nature "read" in Europe at that time, when on one hand a new science was being born and on the other hand the reception of established theological-philosophical traditions continued? The book contributes to the understanding of the history of theological discourse, particularly the hermeneutics of creation, and as a small compendium, it can also serve those interested in the history of natural sciences. Beyond the historical level, it offers its own systematic interpretation. The historical dilemma between how theology thematizes nature and how natural science does so is understood by the author as a problem that can be grasped not only historically and methodologically, but fundamentally.
