Description
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the national question in successor Russia is limited to the analysis of the Chechen wars and the ethnography of Siberian ethnic groups. However, in the European part of Russia, there are many traditional Uralic and more generally Ural nations about which almost nothing is known. These nations speak with a quiet but cultured voice. Following the example of the Finns, they write their heroic epics, and following the Estonians and Hungarians, they seek inspiration in the culture and history of all of Europe. The Russians seem to want to ignore them, yet it appears that the Ural nations are somehow part of their subconscious and that without a true acknowledgment of Ural cultural and linguistic autonomy, Russia will not be free. Finnish journalist and writer Ville Ropponen discusses the past and present of the Ural nations of Russia in his essay "Ural Window" and reflects on their chances of survival.
