Description
Western medieval and Renaissance scholarship owes its remarkable development in many aspects to the scholars and cultural environment of the Second Rome, namely Byzantium. The presented monograph focuses on the context of the emergence and revival of Greek studies in Italian humanism, particularly on the transfer of content and models contained in manuscript tradition and book culture. This process involved translators, philosophers, grammarians, educators and their students, as well as travelers, collectors, manuscript buyers, copyists, diplomats, church officials, patrons, editors, and publishers. The book also deals in detail with the process of translatio studii, which took place in the pivotal years 1360–1534, without which the history of European literature, art, and science of this epoch cannot be imagined.
