A classic detective story set in an academic environment can surprisingly take place in Prague and its surroundings in the 1990s... In the spring of 1996, luck seemed to finally smile upon Michal Janko, a not-so-successful academic with a rather disordered family life. He had settled quite well into a prestigious, albeit somewhat unconventional institution called the School of Advanced Studies, was preparing to submit his habilitation, was getting his first book ready for publication, and moreover, a rather interesting returning emigrant had emerged in his vicinity. But then something went wrong; a diabolus ex machina entered the scene in the form of a foreign woman in a BMW, the School of Advanced Studies had to look for a new director, and it all turned out quite differently than Janko had envisioned... Soon, Michal Janko would realize that he had much bigger worries than the fate of his own habilitation. Who else but he could have had a reason to kill the incoming director of the School? What was found in the boxes containing the estate of a long-dead founder of a somewhat esoteric philosophical movement? And how does all this relate to a manuscript lost years ago, considered by the few who read it to be a unique and groundbreaking work?
