Description
The bylinas about the hero Svyatogor are an integral part of the tradition of Russian folk epic. They describe the meeting of the young hero Ilya Muromets with his old mentor, the dying giant Svyatogor. The young hero takes on Svyatogor's power and status by accepting his life force, thus becoming the most important hero of Russian epic songs. The author introduces readers to the study of epic bylinas, providing an accessible interpretation of the gripping and wondrous mythological story about the inevitable death of the old hero and attempts to find possible answers to the question of why people in the Russian North told it. A commented appendix of thirty-seven versions of the text of this bylinas in the original and Czech translation is also included for a thorough analysis of the variants of the songs about Svyatogor and their Indo-European counterparts.
