Description
This Czech-English book documents the successful experimental theatre project The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart, which took over the entire Drak Theatre building and the adjacent Labyrinth for five weeks in March and April 2015. Dominika Špalková, Tomáš Žižka and Ondrej Spišák received the 2015 Divadelní noviny Award for the production’s concept in the puppetry and visual theatre category. The project transformed the philosophical masterpiece of Czech humanism into a metaphor for the contemporary world, allowing visitors to choose a journey with craftsmen, soldiers, scholars, a married couple, a clergyman or a ruler, and to seek their own metaphorical Paradise of the Heart. The interactive production combined theatre, an art installation, an exhibition and a social game. The book looks back on this production by Drak Theatre and the International Institute of Figurative Theatre through documentary photographs, audience responses, theoretical texts and essays explaining the project’s development and principles. It also includes children’s comments and illustrations, visual motifs, archival family materials and photographs by Bohdan Holomíček, Ondřej Littera and other contributors.
