The work titled Homines Scientiarum. Thirty Stories of Czech Science and Philosophy presents, in five volumes and on five accompanying DVDs, a collection of thirty portraits of diverse personalities from Czech science and education in the 20th century. This is the result of a three-year project that involved the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Cabinet of the History of Science) and the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Pardubice. The unconventional presentation of the creative lives of scientists through a combination of audiovisual documentary and more extensive interviews provides a rich picture of Czech intellectual history over the past century. Although it also offers new insights and previously unknown perspectives, it maintains a generally accessible format. The authors made a thoughtful selection of fields and the focus of personalities, ranging from philosophers to representatives of the sciences of both living and non-living nature, scientifically active at various times, both domestically and abroad. A significant portion is dedicated to personalities who studied in the 1950s, began their professional careers in the 1960s, and actively participated in the transformations of the Czech academic environment in the subsequent period, including numerous testimonies about experiences of imprisonment, prohibition, exile, and other social and ideological obstacles that this generation faced.
