Description

The book presents a Latin-Czech translation of Llull's Vita coaetanea, accompanied by a commentary focusing on the historical context of the Vita. The introductory study familiarizes readers with selected aspects of Llull's thought, emphasizing the apologetic-missionary aspect of his work, which was primarily manifested in Llull's efforts to establish interfaith dialogue with Jews and Muslims through the use of Art. Translated, accompanied by a study and notes by Petr Hromek. Ramon Llull (1232/33–1316), known as doctor illuminatus, is mostly recognized as a mystic, cabalist, and alchemist. However, he can also be characterized as an excellent scholar who, as a self-taught individual, managed to encompass the entire breadth of contemporary education. He can therefore be labeled as an original philosopher who created a specific syncretic Art (ars combinatoria), which includes not only the intellectual tradition of the Latin West but also motifs derived from Jewish and Islamic philosophy and mysticism. It should not come as a surprise that Llull's teachings were followed by such figures as Nicholas of Cusa, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Giordano Bruno, Athanasius Kircher, Kaspar Knittel, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
