When psychology emerged as an independent empirical science in the 19th century, modern neuroscience did not yet exist. However, neuroscience topics were discussed at least in the field of psychophysics, from which a set of letters addressed to the Berlin physician Wilhelm Fliess in 1895 also emerged. These letters were written by Sigmund Freud, but he never dared to publish them. They were published only after his death, first in German under the title Entwurf einer Psychologie, and later, in English, as Project for a Scientific Psychology. From the English title, it is evident that the Project aimed to find scientific foundations for psychology. Freud saw them in the material substrate of the human brain. In his quest to find a biological basis for mental processes in the structure and function of the human brain, he was, however, a very modern author. Although the results he achieved in this work are not particularly dazzling from today's perspective and are rather speculative in nature, there are contemporary researchers (especially proponents of neuropsychoanalysis) who see in the Project a number of themes where Freud, so to speak, hit the nail on the head. The book takes the reader into the dark corners of the beginnings of the neurophysiology of the human brain and presents Freud in a not very well-known...
