Description
The book attempts to delineate the space for possible answers to the following questions: To what extent is it legitimate from the perspective of scientific methodology to seek a correspondence between theory and experiment by accepting auxiliary hypotheses? Is there a precise criterion for such ad hoc hypotheses? Why is the variability of opinions regarding ad hoc hypotheses so diverse? Does the role of scientific methodology lie solely in post-explanation, or can it also be expected to provide pre-explanatory recommendations? Can the descriptive and prescriptive capabilities of individual scientific methodologies be tested? Are the hypotheses of dark matter and dark energy in contemporary cosmology ad hoc? Is the success of cosmological simulations based on dark entities evidence of the real existence of these entities? Can the status of ad hoc hypotheses be better understood within the framework of evolutionary and ecosystemic concepts of science?
