Description
Pierre Vidal-Naquet (1930–2006) was an outstanding French historian, an expert on the history of ancient Greece. His works include Économies et Sociétés en Grèce ancienne (Economy and Society in Ancient Greece, 1972, co-authored with Michel Austin), Le Chasseur noir. Formes de pensées et formes de société dans le monde grec (The Black Hunter. Forms of Thought and Social Organization in the Greek World, 1981), and Le Miroir brisé: tragédie athénienne et politique (The Broken Mirror: Athenian Tragedy and Politics, 2002). As an engaged intellectual, he spoke out against the French colonial war in Algeria in the late 1960s, documented the student movement in 1968, and, along with Michel Foucault and Jean-Marie Domenach, founded the Group for the Information on Imprisonment in 1971. He also devoted considerable effort to fighting historical revisionism, particularly the denial of the Holocaust. His key texts on this issue are summarized in the volume Vrazi paměti.
