Description
Maxim Řek, whose real name is Michael Trivolis, is one of the great figures of European humanities at the end of the 15th and the first half of the 16th century. Through his life and work, he connected several cultural circles. He was born and educated in Greece, which, although already under Ottoman rule, still preserved the vibrant heritage of Byzantine and ancient culture. He then moved to Italy, where he worked as a respected expert on Greek literature, helping to mediate it to local humanists. From there, his steps led to Athos, from where he was called to Moscow as an exceptionally educated philologist to lead the work on correcting translations of liturgical books. However, his stay in Russia ended in tragedy for Maxim: he came into conflict with both ecclesiastical and secular power, was condemned, imprisoned for several years, and even after his release, he was not allowed to return to his beloved Greece.
