Description

The tradition of Pythagoreanism attracted attention for its views and taboos as early as the 6th century BC. Followers of Pythagoras are often regarded as the founders of mathematical thinking or discoverers of numerical ratios of musical harmonies, but they are also labeled as members of a religious sect with no connection to mathematics. A representative figure of early Pythagoreanism in the 5th century BC is Philolaus of Croton. Fragments from his book On Nature contain teachings about the fundamental principles of the world, their harmonious connection, and determination through numbers. We also learn about the peculiarities of an astronomical system that is neither geocentric nor heliocentric, but is linked to a biological conception of the world as a living being. An integral part of the information about early Pythagoreanism are Aristotle's reports, which coincide in many respects with Philolaus's fragments, but also contain important differences, such as the remarkable description of Pythagorean numerical symbolism.
