Description
The study on the relationship between humans and the environment they inhabit draws on insights from culturology and cultural and social ecology, but is more directed towards the field of environmental philosophy and ethics. It is divided into three sections: the first summarizes and evaluates the current development in the field of ecological ethics (anthropocentric versus non-anthropocentric concepts) and culminates in the formulation of a stance called humble anthropocentrism; the second discusses the phenomenon of the so-called re-enchantment of the world based on an analysis of the work of Max Weber; and the third is titled Acceptance of Commitment to Life and synthesizes the teachings of Albert Schweitzer and Hans Jonas. The humble commitment to the world is intended to serve as a guide for contemporary Western society towards ecologically responsible thinking about humans as a factor of change on the face of the Earth.
