Description

The period of the early Middle Ages, during which Christianity penetrated Britain and soon became established there, is referred to as the age of saints and heroes. The book aims to familiarize readers with the fates of several saints from this period through selected hagiographical works from the 7th and 8th centuries. Each chapter discusses Pope Gregory the Great, the initiator of the mission to Britain, the Irish missionary St. Columba, St. Wilfrid, the Bishop of York, the hermit St. Guthlac, and the founder of the famous monasteries in Wearmouth and Jarrow, St. Benedict Biscop, along with his successor St. Ceolfrith. The publication also provides translations of parts of the Latin legends about these saints.
