Description
The publication brings valuable literary-historical material in the form of published and previously unpublished texts by the Czech interwar writer, born in Podůlší near Jičín, Josef Knap (1900-1973). The selection focuses primarily on Knap's journalistic activities (literary critiques, studies, polemics), but through memories and snippets from diaries, it also provides insight into the private life of the writer - a person with firm moral and ethical principles that were fundamentally in conflict with the totalitarian regime. The countryside was a value-defining space for the life and work of Josef Knap, as he himself writes: "Those who know me, my character and perhaps even my personal appearance, or the nature of my literary work, will naturally accept that when asked what the countryside means to me, I answer straightforwardly: the countryside is a part of my being." The book not only offers a new perspective on Czech interwar literature but will also appeal to anyone who is not a stranger to modern Czech history.
