Description
The emancipation of Dalits (formerly untouchables) is one of the most pressing issues in contemporary India. This community, located at the very bottom of the social ladder, has been subjected to severe oppression by the majority society for centuries. The horrific conditions in which Dalits lived until recently, or still live in some places, are vividly depicted in Dalit literature. This is a very distinctive literary movement aimed at describing the injustices and suffering of Dalits, but also their efforts and will to resist these hardships. The book not only provides an introduction to Dalit issues but also showcases some of the most interesting works that Hindi and Tamil Dalit literature have produced so far. In addition to many short stories, it includes excerpts from novels and poems translated from original Hindi and Tamil texts.
