Description
An exceptional personal testimony from the Theresienstadt ghetto, which survived the war bricked up in the local barracks. Otto Weiss's novella I Saw God, That It Was Bad is a unique literary work and a powerful personal testimony of historical significance. Otto Weiss wrote this book in Theresienstadt in 1943, with illustrations added by his daughter Helga, the author of the Diary 1938–1945, who was then 13 years old. Together, they dedicated the book to Helga's mother Irena for her birthday. Shortly thereafter, Otto Weiss was included in a transport to Auschwitz, from which he never returned. God, who took on human form, comes to Theresienstadt to see for himself what the situation is like among the imprisoned Jews. The simple story is imbued with seriousness and depth, a feigned smile conceals bitterness and sorrow. The book reveals the monstrosity and sophistication of the deceitful Nazi propaganda used to conceal the truth and deceive the world.
