"The person whose name is written in this notebook will die." Model student Light Yagami finds the Death Note, which was dropped in the human world by the shinigami named Ryuk. Out of curiosity, he uses it and to his horror discovers that it works! Although Light is initially frightened, he ultimately decides to use the notebook to create a perfect society without crime, and begins killing criminals with its help. As criminals start dying under strange circumstances, L - a mysterious detective known for his ability to solve even the most complicated cases - enters the scene. In a special television broadcast, he announces his intention to catch the perpetrator. Light accepts the challenge, and thus begins a life-and-death battle between the two. Light discovers some new ways to use the notebook that even surprise the shinigami Ryuk.
