This Czech-language novella is a love story and an intimate exploration of the life of an almost eighty-year-old woman who has lost her husband and is gradually losing other people close to her. Although she longs for life, she mostly watches it pass outside the window of her apartment. Then charming Sverrir appears, and she falls in love, while doubts and fears gnaw at her from within. Will she seem ridiculous, and will those around her condemn her? Should she surrender to an unexpected feeling at such an advanced age? The story examines solitary old age and the proximity of death while exploring emotions that remain in people even in later life, though they are rarely expected there. Love and passion do not avoid old age. Icelandic writer Halldóra Thoroddsen (1950–2020) received numerous awards for the book around the world, including the European Union Prize for Literature.
