Riding Ball's train is worth it; the landscape outside the windows is the uninviting contemporary Slovakia, and the fellow travelers are obscure figures from the Slovak microcosm – you can meet anyone here, a mobster, a cannibal, a nurse working abroad, a conductor, or a childhood friend – but the author's sarcastic to hyperbolic comments make even the dull reality an interesting performance, full of humor and pace. One can say about Ball's current book that absurdity, irony, and grotesqueness are not an escape from reality but its concentration through the magnifying glass of the author's curious gaze focused on the details of everyday life.
