Description

This harrowing story follows a father, mother and their young son, who become victims of Stalinist terror. During those warm Moscow nights, thousands of people lie awake and listen. Only one type of car drives through the city at night, belonging to an institution called the NKVD. The vehicles leave the familiar prisons of Lubyanka, Butyrka and Lefortovo, carrying people arrested that night, and return there with them. The author’s parents will be among those arrested. For now, they wait and hope that this time no one will come for them. Why did they join a movement that brings the father to the edge of a mass grave at the execution site in Butovo and sends the mother to eight years in Gulag camps on islands in northern Russia? The author’s memories focus largely on the little-known or forgotten Gulag for children, where he spent the first seven years of his life. This is a testimony giving a voice to the youngest, anonymous victims of Stalinist terror. The book is in Czech.
