Description

This Czech-language book tells the true story of Vincenc Vicherek, a Czech soldier in the First World War. As subjects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Czechs and Moravians were also conscripted and sent to the front, many departing for the trenches convinced they would be home by Christmas. Vincenc Vicherek, a woodcutter and poacher, was sent to fight in the trenches of the Great War in the Italian Dolomites. He came close to death many times during the bloody battles and, after fierce fighting, was regarded as a ruthless killer. During the final winter of the war, an enemy artillery attack high in the mountains triggered an avalanche that swept him away, and he was declared missing. He managed to escape the white hell and secretly return home to the Beskids. In the meantime, however, an unexpected drama had destroyed his family, and those responsible also sought to eliminate him. After his premature return, he was pursued as a military deserter, eventually forcing him to emigrate to America.
