Through underground tunnels, crawling under barbed wire, swimming and rowing across rivers, by car, by plane, in the back of a truck full of paintings, or on foot. Many of Hitler's most significant henchmen, who were still near the Führer's bunker in Berlin at the end of the war, tried to escape the city in these various ways. It was quite difficult. The city was almost completely surrounded by the Soviet army, making it life-threatening and nearly impossible to get away. Albert Bormann, Theodor G. Morell, Julius Gregor Schaub fled south towards Austria or Bavaria, while Joachim von Ribbentrop, Wilhelm Keitel, Alfred Jodl, Karl Dönitz, and Albert Speer escaped north, and many others tried to get away through Berlin's Tiergarten. Most of the people in the bunker did not want to die and were trying to escape from the shelter that had become a prison for them. Not only prominent figures like ministers, state officials, and military members wanted to get away quickly, but also secretaries, doctors, and unknown boys from the Hitler Youth.
