Sigismund of Luxembourg was the second son of Emperor Charles IV, King of the Romans and Emperor, whose shoulders were adorned with both the Hungarian and Czech royal crowns. For nearly half a century, he was one of the greatest and most successful rulers of the late Middle Ages, and particularly in Germany and Hungary, he is regarded as one of the most significant monarchs. He resolved the long papal schism, sought to reform the church, conducted truly European politics, strengthened the position of the Roman Empire and its ruler, and ultimately achieved reconciliation between the Catholic Church and the Hussites. In Bohemia, however, he was always known as the 'fox with a red mane,' who deceived and betrayed his brother Wenceslaus IV many times, lured Jan Hus to Constance and had him burned, and led long and brutal wars against the Hussites that completely devastated the country. Even after he truly ascended to the Czech royal throne in 1436, he did not show himself to be a ruler genuinely concerned for the welfare and benefit of his land. His contemporaries characterized Sigismund of Luxembourg as a 'man of two faces,' who always pursued his own interests and did not hesitate to lie and deceive, but he was also capable of compromise and, like his father, a master of diplomacy.
