King Wenceslas IV sat on the Czech throne for 41 years and was the King of the Romans for 34 years. In terms of length of reign, he surpassed his famous father Charles IV and wore the Czech crown longer than any of our medieval and modern monarchs - fifty-six years, as it was placed on his head when he was just a two-year-old boy. Therefore, he could not be labeled as an 'incompetent and lazy' king, as the electors described him when Wenceslas was deposed from the Roman throne, nor merely a 'glutton and drunkard,' as his enemies slandered him; after all, according to other contemporaries, he was 'an excellent companion, a wise and courteous prince.' He ruled during truly difficult times that the Western Christian world had never experienced before - the papal schism turned everything upside down, and most of the certainties he relied on ceased to apply. Wenceslas's failures were largely the result of excessive paternal love and poor upbringing, and what Charles IV did not ruin, the living Luxembourgers took care of, as Wenceslas found no support in them, but mostly they threw obstacles in his way, just like the Czech and imperial high nobility and archbishops. He probably had no real friends, and his marriage was not happy either. He lived in constant fear and treated his melancholy with wine, until his personality fell apart.
