Description

Before midnight, a defiant call ending in a deep growl rings out, followed by another aggressive, challenging roar. A stag leaves the shadowed edge of the forest and steps into the moonlight, a powerful animal with magnificent antlers crowned at the tips. His rival soon appears, equally strong, with massive antlers, powerful muscles and a desire to win a herd of hinds. Steam pours from their excited breath as their antlers rake the moss and tear up clumps of grass. They feint, retreat and wait for the right moment to attack. Vladek Fryčka, the gamekeeper in charge of a hunting association’s grounds, lives for the area entrusted to him, and the wild nature of the Beskydy Mountains is his true home. Then something happens that Vladek does not expect. Death comes without warning, and the mountains are left desolate, with only the sound of wind moving through the branches of ancient spruces and mature beeches whose wood is hard as stone.
