Description

In recent decades, education has often been reduced to merely a tool of the market economy. However, this has not always been the case. The book by twelve Czech historians outlines the journey that education in the Czech lands has undergone from its medieval beginnings, when it was accessible only to a narrow elite, to the mass education of the 21st century. The work offers a broadly conceived synthesis that Czech historiography has long lacked. Its main axis consists of the history of education and learning in Bohemia and Moravia (and in Slovakia and Transcarpathian Ukraine during the relevant periods) up to the year 2004. In addition to all levels, types, and forms of education, the publication also addresses closely related topics such as school everyday life, school architecture, youth and student associations. It also explores the connections between education, the flourishing of book culture including libraries and reading societies, the publication of newspapers and magazines, and the rise of new media. The discussion also includes areas of research that have been little explored so far, such as the education of girls and clergy or folk education.
