Opuštěná společnost - Česká cesta od Masaryka po Babiše – Tabery Erik (2017)

We live in a time when one false post on Twitter or Facebook has a greater reach than the systematic work of investigative journalists. Populists are gaining strength by criticizing the establishment, even though they themselves benefit long-term from their own elite positions. The achievements of democracy, such as freedom of speech and media independence, are being questioned less than thirty years after November 1989. The editor-in-chief of the weekly Respekt describes the adventurous Czech journey from the founding of the republic to the present and places today's political and social events in a historical and European context. It is, in a way, a conversation with the past about our future, in which the author’s thoughts are framed by the reflections of K. H. Borovský, H. G. Schauer, T. G. Masaryk, Ferdinand Peroutka, Václav Černý, Jan Patočka, Erazim Kohák, and Václav Havel. Referring to the great critical spirits of the democratic tradition, Tabery clearly shows that the best way to face the risks of the present is not through panic, but with a cool head and determination.
