Description
The Charles Bridge has connected both banks of the Vltava River since 1357 and has become an inseparable part of Prague's impressive panorama. The foundation stone was laid by Emperor Charles IV himself – and although it has often faced severe adversities, it still stands today. Gradually, it has been complemented by a series of sculptures. With the exception of the bronze statue of St. John of Nepomuk, all other 29 statues and sculptural groups of significant saints are carved from stone. Thanks to them, the oldest surviving stone bridge is a unique structure that has no equal in the world. For this reason, it should not be overlooked during a visit to Prague.
