Description
In 1120/1121, Norbert of Xanten founded the first community of Premonstratensians in Prémontré, laying the cornerstone of an order that later became one of the most significant and largest Roman Catholic canons' orders. Ulrich Leinsle clearly and understandably describes the beginnings, the building of the order's structures, and the medieval expansion of the Premonstratensians, after which difficult times ensued during the Reformation, Counter-Reformation, and Enlightenment. He subsequently narrates the history of the order up to the secularized present, transcending the perspective of purely ecclesiastical history and also introducing readers to the cultural and social contributions of the Premonstratensians.
