Description
When did the first Jews settle in the territory of Prague? It can be said with almost certainty that Jewish merchants and moneylenders appeared in the lower town of Prague as early as the 10th century, and mentions of the first Jewish synagogue are only two centuries younger. But when was the cornerstone of the Old-New Synagogue laid? Did angels really bring it on their snow-white wings from Jerusalem? Was the Golem the first artificial human in the world, or was he made of flesh and blood like any ordinary mortal? These and similar stories from the time when the so-called Jewish ghetto began to form in the city, from the flourishing period of Josefov, medieval Jewish pogroms, and from the times when Jewish communities began to emerge outside the Old Town, are included in another publication by M. Wagner, mapping the history of old Jewish Prague. Its inhabitants represented about a quarter of the entire Prague population at the time. Their long and thorny past has left behind many monuments and even more anecdotes and stories that have earned an irreplaceable place among other old Prague legends.
