A castle is not just a landmark of the region, an elegant extensive building, or a showcase residential object of one of the numerous noble families that lived in our territory; a castle is primarily a place with a rich history that reaches deep into the national past. Its "family tree" often contains surprising dramatic moments and is frequently full of unexpected twists, pivotal historical moments, and significant events that co-create the history of our country. Whether it is the castles of Konopiště, Lány, Dobříš, Hluboká, Český Krumlov, Orlík, Duchcov, Litomyšl, Ratibořice, Telč, or the Lednice-Valtice area, it is always a touch of real history. And yet, each of the castles mentioned in this publication is different – just as the noble lords, residents of these grand residences, or merely temporary visitors, guests, or famous architects and builders who imparted an unmistakable character to these castles, differ – starting with the prominent families of Schwarzenberg and Rožmberk and ending with Princess Zaháňská, Count Casanova, or the sitting president of the republic.
