Description
On March 6, 1836, four thousand Mexican soldiers attacked the former mission station of Alamo. All the defenders perished in the defense of the fortress, and their deaths became a memento for hundreds of Texas militia members, who prepared a heavy defeat for the victors of Alamo at San Jacinto weeks later, shouting "Remember the Alamo." The battle marked the end of Texas's affiliation with Mexico and became a symbol of independence and part of a myth that persists to this day. The echo of the Texans' cry from San Jacinto was repeated throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, when the word Alamo was replaced by other expressions, such as the titles of American newspapers in February and March 1898, "Remember the Maine." The myth of Alamo, which included references to the deaths of innocent women and children slaughtered after the conquest of the mission or fortress by victorious Mexicans, endured even in serious literature until the second half of the 20th century, when Mexican and American historians reconstructed the actual course of the battle.
