The theme of the book is the fates of survivors from a specific group of Holocaust victims during the existence of Tiso's 'priestly republic,' which handed over 60,000 of its own Jewish fellow citizens for extermination to Nazi-controlled concentration camps. Approximately 20,000 Jews remained in Slovakia, who, in an unequal position and with a visible mark of humiliation, awaited what would happen to them. Would they also be sent in cattle cars to a terrifying unknown? Many found themselves not only in the position of hunted prey but, by entering hiding places, also became directly dependent on those who provided them with a temporary new 'home.' The plot of the book, which is structured at the intersection of historical fiction and non-fiction, presents a somewhat overlooked aspect of the Holocaust. It is an extraordinary historical reflection on the times of World War II in the territory of former Czechoslovakia and simultaneously introduces the stories of reminiscing witnesses who decided to speak publicly about their experiences only relatively recently.
